It was really eerie. It's full of old hospitals and old people. All the architecture is 1960's style (which I really like), including the new buildings being put up. I don't want to go into real detail because I don't want to detract from the pictures I'm about to post. Here are two highlights:
An old laboratory with a huge triple-bard-wired fence surrounding it and a guard post.
Near the big main hospital there were posts with letters that patients had made. Here are pictures I took of them (enhanced so you can actually read them):


I'm pretty much speechless. Except for what I've already said. These two things are incredible.

From what you and Erin have said about Roosevelt Island, I keep getting the feeling that you are at the beginning of a really bad SCI-FI movie. Watch out for the shrews. These land-developers that lure you to abandoned islands with ruins of 'hospitals' never mention then man-eating shrews.
